Belly Style: Casual Stripes

Here I am holding my basketball, seriously that's what I feel like!  I have maybe 4 pairs of shoes that currently fit my marshmallow feet, oh the joys of pregnancy.  But I'm still all smiles, well on most days!



I finally opened my Etsy shop and added some items including these 2 necklaces.  I only decided over a year ago I was going to open a shop.  I find it ironic that I find the time now right before baby boy arrives.

Over the weekend I was thinking about the things I've been missing throughout this pregnancy and how excited I am that I will be able to have these things back in my life soon enough!

Here is the list:

 - An Italian Hero!  I cannot even explain how badly I want to bite into one at this very moment.  I already told my fiancee he will be bringing me one to the hospital!  I've only wanted one from 3 months on.  Come to mama!

- To be able to lay on my stomach again!  I was never a stomach sleeper but that fact that I don't have the option drives me insane!  I just want to be able to lay on the couch on my STOMACH and watch TV.  Not something I ever thought I would miss.

- A glass of wine!  I will be honest, I love myself a glass of wine every now and then.  It's always nice to have a glass of wine with dinner after a stressful day.  I've had plenty of stressful days these last 9 months but no wine, so that first glass is going to be quite tasty.

- To be able to touch my toes again!  Not being able to bend down makes me crazy!  My belly is completely in the way.  Although I am going to miss the shelf it currently serves as.

- My shoes fitting again!  This is more of a current problem.  My feet decided they would swell ridiculously the last few weeks of my pregnancy.  Thank you feet!  I cannot even remember the last time I wore a pair of heels.

I am also excited I will not have to pee every hour (or 10 minutes for that matter) anymore!

I couldn't have made it through this pregnancy without...

I'm sure every woman has her ups and downs throughout her pregnancy.  My pregnancy was definitely on the easy side but there were a few pains and annoyances here and there.  There were a few items that helped me through those bad times and made these 9 months a little easier.  Here are a few of my pregnancy survival items!



1.  Chewable PreNatal Vitamins:  You may be laughing but I have a serious problem when it comes to swallowing pills.  And have you seen the size of most prenatal vitamins?  Two words: horse pills!  Needless to say I was ecstatic when I found out VitaFusion made gummy vitamins and my doctor approved them!

2.  Maternity Belt:  Around 29 weeks I started experiencing horrible back pain due to my lil man pushing on my sciatic nerve.  Let me just say it was one of the worst pains I have ever experienced.  I dreaded having to get out of bed and walk anywhere.  That was when the waddle began because walking normally was no longer possible.  I endured the pain for about 2 weeks before I finally decided I would try anything that might help.  I resorted to the maternity belt, not very flattering I know, but a lifesaver.  I could walk again!!  After about 2 weeks of wearing the belt, the pain disappeared.  Thank you maternity belt for getting me through those 2 weeks!

3.  Mustela Stretch Mark Cream:  My cousin recommended I use this cream to try and avoid stretch marks and boy am I glad I did.  Not one stretch mark!  Now who knows if this cream was the sole reason why I have no stretch marks but I am going to believe it is!  And my belly sure has expanded!

4.  Snoogle Pillow:  This is by far the most amazing thing ever invented.  I don't know how I would have survived without this pillow.  I have been sleeping with this since I was 3 months pregnant.  The further along I got the more I needed this pillow to sleep.  Now at 37 weeks, I don't sleep well regardless what I try but without this pillow I would literally never sleep!

5.  Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion:  My skin became extremely dry throughout my pregnancy.  Without a good hydrating lotion, I would have been miserable because there is nothing I hate more than dry skin!  Eucerin did the trick and is not greasy like so many other lotions I have tried.

6. Cantaloupe:  Since about 30 weeks, I have been eating a cantaloupe a week all by myself.  I don't know what it is about cantaloupe but I just can't get enough of it.  It is just so refreshing!

belly style

Okay lets talk maternity clothes.  I remember when I first found out I was pregnant I dreaded the thought of having to wear maternity clothes.  Why you ask?  For as long as I can remember fashion has been a huge part of my life.  In my mind maternity clothes were unflattering and not fashionable.  I was hoping to not have to buy ANY maternity clothes, haha what a joke.  When my pants all stopped fitting around 3 months I knew it was time to do some research.  I refused to spend a lot of money on maternity clothes but was determined to find stylish, trendy clothing.  I wanted clothing that still represented me and were true to my style.  I went on pinterest and searched both the web and blogs for inspiring maternity style.  If you want to take a look at my belly style board on pinterest, you can do so here.  Next, I went through my closet and organized it based on what clothing still fit or would fit as my stomach expanded.  I put all those pieces front and center in my closet and sent the rest of my clothing on a nice long vacation.  I was surprised at how many pieces I was able to work with.  Unfortunately, as the belly grew that section of my closet shrunk, sigh.  At about 20 weeks my belly really popped and only about 1/3 of my closet was wearable.  Today I thought I would share some of the stores where I was most successful finding affordable, stylish maternity clothes as well as what I felt was flattering and unflattering.

Hopefully you will find some of my tips helpful either now or in the future.

When shopping for maternity clothes the most important things to me were:  Comfort and Versatility.  I obviously wanted clothing that would be comfortable to be in all day, but I also wanted pieces that could be styled in a variety of ways so it did not look like I was constantly wearing the same thing over and over again.

Stores I recommend:
- Target (great dresses)
- Gap (great pants/shorts)
- Old Navy (great tanks/shorts)
- Destination Maternity - Motherhood section (great everything)

These are the stores where I was most successful finding stylish maternity clothes at a reasonable price.  I also purchased a lot of non maternity clothing (in a larger size) at H&M and Forever21.

Other stores that have super cute maternity style are ASOS and Topshop.  I was nervous to purchase from either of these stores solely because they were online and I do not know how there sizes run.  I did not want to deal with the hassle of having to mail back any clothing that did not fit.  Although I saw some pieces I absolutely loved on both these sights.  

By the time I had to start wearing maternity clothes, it was well into the Spring.  Therefore, my wardrobe consisted of mostly dresses and skirts.  One thing you need to know about me is that if I could wear a dress everyday I would be a happy girl.  Many people do not feel the same!  Once the summer hit, I started to wear a lot of shorts and tanks as well as continuing to wear tons of dresses.  I did not wear pants often throughout my pregnancy because most of the ones I found were not my style so I just opted not to wear them.  I do feel it is essential to invest in at least one pair of jeans.  If you are a pants person I strongly recommend the Gap.

Key pieces:
(if your pregnant around the same time I was)
- maxi dresses/flowy dresses
- maxi skirts with elastic waists
- blazers 
- tanks
- vests
- flats/sandals

Maxi dresses were definitely my go to item because of there flowiness, which is ideal for growing with your belly.  Oh and did I mention they are extremely comfortable.  I added a blazer when it was cool out, wore a top over my dresses to transform them into a skirt (for a different look), layered with vests, or added a belt to cinch the waist (even though my waist slowly started to disappear).  If you can no longer use the holes on your belt (yes this happened to me), making a fun knot is always an option.  You can find some great examples of different knots here.  As far as cinching your waist with a belt, if it is early in your pregnancy and you are still trying to hide the fact that you are preggos, I do not suggest this.  Cinching your waist will excentuate your bump!  For me layering was a must.  I felt that many tops and dresses were more flattering after adding a vest or blazer.  This way I was able to hide any flaws that were visible especially when wearing a tighter top.  I found the baggier the top the worse  I looked, so I did opt for more form fitting clothes.  I've noticed that a lot of maternity tops are tight at the bust and flare out at the waist, which in my opinion can make you look much larger than you actually are.  I always felt more comfortable in clothing that clearly showed I was pregnant (no matter how big my belly looked) rather than pieces that just made it look like I was gaining weight.  Show that belly off, don't try and hide it!  Embrace your bump!  If you are purchasing pants, I found the full panel to be much more comfortable than the low rise panel.  Many women love the belly band, which can be worn with non maternity pants.  Honestly, I just felt awkward having my fly wide open even if a band was covering it but to each their own.  I had every intention on continuing to wear my heels throughout my pregnancy; then the back pain kicked in!  Invest in comfortable flats!  Oh and make sure they have some room for your foot to expand because swelling is definitely a possibility especially in the summer.

Notice all the layering!  To be honest with you most of the clothing in theses pictures are not maternity, but that's not to say I haven't gained much weight during my pregnancy.  I have gained 32 lbs so far and still have 6 weeks to go!  I was just determined to still love what I was wearing everyday.  I actually had some fun dressing up my baby bump.  It was a challenge at times but I am happy to say I did not give up on my clothes while being pregnant.  I speak as though my clothing has feelings, haha! 

It is not necessary to throw hundreds and hundreds of dollars away on maternity clothes.  And this is coming from a person who rarely ever wears the same thing twice and is a very impulsive buyer.  You are only going to wear these clothes for a few months, so don't put yourself in debt buying tons of maternity clothes.  Now if you do have the money to throw away then definitely check out A Pea in the Pod and Hatch collection.

let's chat


So today marks the 34th week of my pregnancy and boy did it fly!  Only six weeks to go, yikes.  The excitement builds everyday as well as the panic.  It is all a bit overwhelming at times, though I can't help but think that feeling is only natural.  To be honest I still have those moments sometimes when I stop and think "I'm really having a baby."  Overall, this has been a pretty easy pregnancy and I am thankful for that.  I'm hoping I can get through these next six weeks with as much ease as the first thirty-four weeks.  The worrying started the minute I found out I was pregnant and that is here to stay.  I mean how can I not worry everyday for the rest of  my life when I no longer only have myself to take care of.  But I am surely looking forward to some long snuggle sessions with my little man once he arrives.  Oh and you know what else I'm looking forward to, fitting in my clothes again!  

So I thought I would share some of my favorite and least favorite things about being pregnant.  Let's see if any of you mama's (or mama's to be) feel/felt the same.

Favorite things:
- the all day kicking that currently takes place in my belly.
- this seriously huge bump I have going on over here (when else would you embrace feeling huge).
- seeing my little boy every month since I needed to have an ultrasound every month due to some issue (which thankfully is no longer an issue).
- having an excuse to be weighted on by the fiancee (selfish, i know!).
- shopping for lil man clothes.
- the excitement I feel everyday to meet this little guy...it is indescribable.
- the challenge of staying true to my style throughout this body changing journey (I guess you need to love fashion as much as I do to actually enjoy this).

Not so favorite things:
- the exhaustion!  It's unlike anything you have ever experienced before.
- the ugly, bumpy veins on my right leg due to all the pressure the baby is putting on that side (yes disgusting, i know!).
- the unbearable sciatic pain I had for about 3 weeks.  I don't miss that.
- not being able to wear my heels anymore because believe me I had every intention on prancing around in them throughout this pregnancy!
- not being able to eat cold cuts.  All I want is an italian hero, is that too much to as for?!?
- that fact that trying to shave my legs is an extremely hard task these days

I'm pretty sure y'all are happy the weekend is here.  Since I'm not currently working, the weekends feel the same as every other day.  My girlfriend and I are having a yard sale tomorrow.  Lets hope I can make it through the heat.  What do you have planned for the weekend?  Hopefully something fabulous!  Well whatever it is, enjoy!
