Collaborative Post - The Importance of the Right Scissors

There is a common misconception that giving a haircut is a simple procedure requiring a few snips here and there with a household pair of scissors or clippers. However, those with a background in haircutting know that is takes more skill than that, as well as harder working tools.  Some of the key components of a good haircut are a really good quality pair of hair scissors, a stylist who listens to your needs and wants and can balance those against what suits you, a steady hand and some patience on both the client’s side and the stylist’s. Today we are going to discuss the importance of the right pair of hair scissors.

An untrained eye might not be able to tell the difference between one pair of scissors from the next but keep an eye on the tools your stylist uses and know they’ve picked them deliberately for their size and blade functionality.  Bigger scissors are used to manage longer and thicker hair while smaller sizes give precision to shorter, finer hair. On top of this, smaller scissors are often a better fit to stylist’s hands and used to perform cuts along the hairline, which requires accuracy.  One trick a stylist may use to fine their ideal size is to place a pair of scissors on the palm of their hand with the finger hole touching the base of the thumb, the tip of the blade should be in the last section of the middle finger.

When it comes to the scissor blade itself there are, broadly speaking, two types of hair cutting blades:  beveled edge and the convex.  Which is used says a lot about the hairstylist’s experience and personal preference. Bevelled-edge blades are made from a mixture of metals which makes them very light weight and are often designed with micro serrations which means that they stop hair from sliding down the blade. This type of blade is also good for slow detail cutting and can be used on dry hair but cannot be used for slice cutting as the blade will jam.

Convex blades are the sharpest of the two with a razor-like edge. They give a very smooth cutting action and can be used for all cutting techniques but excel in slicing because of the ultra-sharp edge. Because this type of blade requires some practice they are generally suited better to more experienced hairdressers.  Both scissor size and blade type are just two factors that a good stylist will consider when it comes to selecting the perfect tools to create the style you want.

Dark Denim

Layering is a great way to wear crop tops in the winter and that is exactly what I did this past weekend. I added a statement necklace which is definitely the focal point of this look.  I love pewter colored shoes because they are extremely versatile.  Between the color of these boots, the buckle detailing and the pointed toe, I knew I had to have these!

Working Girl with Style - Fashion Linkup

Welcome to Working Girl with Style, a place to share your work style whether you work from home, in a school or at an office.  Following a dress code can sometimes be challenging because lets face it not all fashion is appropriate for the work place.  Join me every Thursday to share your work style and meet some other stylish gals!  We can all use some inspiration from time to time.

Hope everyone had a fabulous holiday full of love and laughter.  I wore this outfit yesterday for Christmas.  I love the metallic color of the skirt and the fact that the length is still appropriate for work. I kept the top simple with this cozy sweater from Zara. It was a the perfect combination of comfort and holiday glam.

Sparkle for the Season

Sequins, one of my all time favorite pieces to wear around the holidays!  This sequin jacket is quite flashy but I adore it.  These high waisted metallic shimmer pants worked perfectly with the jacket.  I decided to add some edge to the look and keep it sexy with the addition of a crop top.  A look I would love to wear for New Years!

I love the structure of this jacket especially the funnel styled neck.  The bow detail on the belt adds a very feminine feel to the coat.  I kept it simple with leggings and my new favorite boots.  I searched high and low for a reasonably priced pair of knee high boots and this pair is perfect.  The height of the boot as well as the leg width is exactly what I was looking for.  A great simple look for the holidays!

Merry & Bright

Oversized skirts, another one of my favorite pieces to wear during the holiday season.  I kept the overall look simple so the skirt remained the main focal point.  I am in love with the dramatic feel of this skirt from its color to the volume.

Black Fur

This week I thought I would share some of my favorite pieces to wear around the holidays with fur being on the top of that list.  I love that I can dress this jacket up or down and still love the way it looks.  Not to mention how cozy it is!  I kept the look simple with the addition of bold lips.

Photography Gives Life To The Lifeless

One of the best ways to express yourself today is to take a picture of something you like or you do not, to share it and to add a comment that fits perfectly. Sometimes the comments are not even necessary, one picture can say so many things and can show your opinion on anything that is portrayed in it. Photography is an art that helps people to show what they feel and get it all captured. This art today has been infiltrated basically in every sphere. Right now, a New York Commercial photographer takes photos of some perfume, photos that have to be ready for launching the perfume’s campaign the next month. At the same time there is another photographer, somewhere in Alabama, taking pictures of a bride and a groom kissing and there is some other guy with a camera, somewhere in Asia, taking pictures of people eating bugs for some Discovery pictorial. It is really cool the way pictures can move us and our feelings sometimes. One picture can change your way of judging something, it can also open new sights, you have never thought about.  Photography is meant to show us the story of an image, to inform us. You simply, cannot count how many times a day you get to see different images, on the street, on the internet and at your home. People like to capture specific events, things or other people. You can be an amateur photographer, taking pictures of your pet dancing or you can be a professional photographer, taking pictures of other pets dancing, in the middle of some competition, and you are getting paid for it. Today you can relate to photography in so many ways. Because you are the photographer or you are photographed or you paid someone to make photographs. It is always something about this art that involves humans. We would never do something constantly if we would not enjoy doing it. It is always interesting to see what a picture of you would look like. Photography portrays real, tangible stuff but it involves an emotion. Even if there is a stone photographed it will make you feel somehow about it. That it is the awesome thing about photography. The place or the thing that is photographed is on the image, not moving and not breathing but somehow it makes us feel an emotion. Photography gives life to the lifeless.

Checkered

I couldn't resist the deals Zara offered on Black Friday so I purchased myself some new goodies.  The jeans and coat were both on sale for prices I just couldn't pass up.  I was a need of a pair of black wash jeans so I was thrilled to find this pair.  I love the ripped detail at the knees and the fact that the rips are subtle and not exaggerated.  The mixture of plaid and leather detailing is the perfect combination for this coat.  The length hits exactly where I wanted it to, which just made the coat more appealing!

Victoria Jackson Cosmetics Foundation Duo

Foundation is the one makeup product that I just have never had luck with.  I cannot even name all the brands and types I have tried.  I had given up on liquid and creme foundations and for the past few year stuck solely to powder.  I decided to give creme foundation another try with the Victoria Jackson Cosmetics Foundation Duo.  Victoria Jackson Cosmetics was kind enough to send me a sample to test out.
The Victoria Jackson foundation duo comes in a sturdy, nice sized compact which is perfect to throw in your purse.  The foundation duo comes with two shades in each compact and is offered in Light, Medium, Tan and Dark.  I loved the idea of having two different shades in the same compact.  It gave me the opportunity to blend the shades together to find the perfect match for my skin.  I always have trouble finding the perfect shade for my skin and this foundation duo seemed like the perfect solution and that it was.

Check out my SOLOs!

I recently discovered SOLO Eyewear (thanks to Brandbacker), a company that designs unique, stylish eyewear using recycled bamboo.  Not only do they offer a variety of beautifully handcrafted sunglasses but each pair purchased funds eye care for people in need.  SOLO Eyewear was kind enough to send me my very own pair of SOLOs that I absolutely love.  The fit was excellent and very comfortable.  I adore the contrast between the bamboo temples and the tortoise shell frame.  My sunglass collection is minimal these days because I am extremely picky when it comes to my frames.  I just found my go to sunglasses for those casual days when I am not getting fancied up for work.  I loved the frames so much that I couldn't resist ordering myself a second pair!  The Tiger sunnies won me over the minute I laid eyes on them.  They just fit my personality perfectly.  I love the creativity behind these hand painted frames and the statement that they make.  It is no secret I love to shop but when I get the chance to make a purchase that supports not only the arts but a great cause like Vision to Give, it makes that purchase that much more fulfilling.  Knowing that I had the opportunity to contribute a small amount to the large population of people in need of prescription eyeglasses and sight saving surgeries made my purchase a 110 times more satisfying.  Thanks SOLO!

Thanks to Brandbacker and SOLO Eyewear you can use the code: SOLOten to receive a 10% discount on your order (Expires 12/31)!  Head over to their website to find the perfect pair for you or a one of a kind gift for this holiday season that supports a great cause.  The holiday season is about giving and that is exactly what you will be doing when you purchase your SOLOs!  Happy Shopping!

Wearing: c/o Victoria Secret PINK Boyfriend Crew  |  c/o Victoria Secret PINK Leggings  |  Boots: Urban Outfitters  |  Bracelet: Stella & Dot  |  Rings: Gorjana, Stella & Dot, ASOS  |

Oh leggings, you cannot go wrong with them!  Not only are the styling options endless but the comfort level is incredible.  Today I am teaming up with Chictopia and Victoria Secret PINK again to style a casual but stylish look.  The PINK legging style options are endless ranging from simple, similar to the ones I am wearing, to prints, velour, mesh and sequin detailing.  They even offer a pair of Hologram leggings, pretty awesome!

This crew neck is definitely a PINK holiday must have!  I paired this boyfriend crew with a pair of PINK leggings to create an overall comfy and relaxed look.  The tunic length of this crew neck is perfect to wear with leggings or a pair of jeans.
